Reviews: Baffect Large Size Rabbit Litter Box with Removable Drawer
Do you get any little bunnies, guinea pigs or chinchillas at your home? Are you sometimes distraught over his or her waste as it makes the house dirty and fetid? Sometimes, I am. A few days ago, I bought my 8-year-old son a lion head bunny. Consequently, I had also to prepare well some other necessities of a rabbit like hutch, litter tray, hay and chew toys etc.How is it going, guys? Welcome back to our blog. This is Darina from Baffect team. Baffect’s items are not Ikea’s but compatible.
Today, we are going to review an excellent rabbit litter box. First off, let’s get to know some details of it.
-Details-
This product is called Baffect Large Size Rabbit Litter Box with Removable Drawer. When you open the delivery package, you can see that the rabbit litter box is covered with a PP bag to protect it from dirtying and scratching and there is no installation needed here. The rabbit box gets a grid hollowed-out base, a removable drawer pan to hold the rabbit litter and a fixed knob on the back side. The colors of the rabbit litter box I bought are blue and white. The drawer, the bottom protection holders and the fixed knob are white and the other part is blue.
And the measurement of the litter box is 16.14*11.81*6.30in and its weight is 1.99lbs.
Besides, the measurement of the drawer tray is 13.97*9.44*1.14in.
And the size is large enough for different kinds of domestic rodent pets, even when they are full-grown. There is no need to change the litter box as they grow up. Our 6-month lion head rabbit is about 9in long, so he can use this litter box very well.
Then there are 4.13in high fender walls around the litter box except a lower entrance, which can well stop the sprayed urine of the bunnies polluting the surrounding environment. Because rabbits including our lion head rabbit are territorial animals, they use spraying urine to show their territory.

-Features-
To choose a good litter tray for our lovely little bunny, we have to take everything into consideration. Let’s check the features of the Baffect Large Size Rabbit Litter Box with Removable Drawer now.
This litter box is made of durable and thick PP material, which is bite-proof. Thus it suits not only our lion head rabbit very well but also other rodent friends like Dutch rabbits, Rex rabbits, Dwarf Begonia rabbits, Guinea pigs and Chinchillas because they all like to bite things, which is one of their natural instincts. The surface of the litter tray is very smooth and it won’t hurt our little rodents.
Besides, the square and right-angled design of the litter box makes this litter box fit well to place in the most excrement spots of little rodents’ hutch.
And looking down, the grid hollowed-out base with 1.3*0.47in holes is scientifically designed to get the faeces and urine to pass through and fall in the below tray, which can prevent the excrement from adhering to the base. In addition, the feet of rodents which are usually much larger than 1.3*0.47in won’t be stuck in the grid holes, so it’s safe for the litter rodents’ use, the same with our lion head rabbit.
Down further, we can find that the below litter pan holding the rabbit litter is a removable drawer, which makes the litter pan cleaning very easy and convenient. There is no need to get the whole litter box down from the hutch to clean. For absorbing the urine and covering up the smell, we can put some materials like sawdust, diaper, wood pellet or urine sand in the drawer tray.
The depth of the drawer tray can be about 1.02in. If we don’t want the faeces and urine of the rodents in a mess, we probably need to change the material and clean the tray every other day.
On the bottom of the rabbit litter box, there are bottom protection holders on both sides which are fastened by 4 screws. Thus the rabbit litter box can bear large capacity without slipping and slanting.
Another vital part is the fixed knob on the back side of the rabbit litter box. We unscrew the hat of the fixed knob and attach the litter box to the hutch and then screw the fixed knob hat on. The rabbit litter box can be fixed to the hutch firmly. No matter how crazy the little rodents jump at dawn and dusk, it is acceptable and the litter box will not be overturned and moved.
There are two different color schemes of the rabbit litter boxes to choose: blue and pink with white, which are the most popular colors among boys and girls. I bought the blue one for my son.
And another vital thing is the diet of the lion head rabbits. As a lion head rabbit's teeth never stop growing and need external force to wear them down, about 75% of the lion head rabbits’ diet should be hay. Hay is crucial to help the rabbits’ teeth from growing too large. If no enough hay is provided, lion head rabbits may bite their hutch, litter tray or anything they could reach. And 20% of their diet should be high-fiber pellets which can be bought from the stores. The last 5% of the diet should be law fruits and vegetables like leafy greens, celery and even berries.
Looking at this spectacle, my son and I were astonished and a little confused. After we cleaned the hutch thoroughly, we checked the cctv which could see this place precisely. From the cctv we knew that the lion head rabbit was so active at dawn as he was also one of the crepuscular animals. When he jumped joyfully on the litter box, one of his feet was stuck in the grid hole. He tried all the ways to get his feet out so the litter box turned over. And we also saw that once or twice he sprayed urine in fan-shaped.
We thought the litter box should be firmly fixed on the hutch and something is needed to defend his sprayed urine. Thus we brought an iron wire to help to fix the litter box on the hutch but we had no good idea for defending his sprayed urine. Later, we found the cleaning task was not so convenient because the iron wire should be opened first, then we could take down the litter box to clean.

-About the Lion Head Rabbits-
Before we brought the lion head rabbit home, my son asked me to collect so much information about the lion head rabbits. To keep the lion head rabbit well, we studied the information very carefully.
The lion head rabbits are very famous domestic pets in the world because they combine perfectly the playful joy with quiet cuddles. The life span of the lion head rabbits is 7-10 years. It is long enough to form an amazing bond with the animal, but not too short to cause an owner to worry about their demise. Thus for children, they are perfect companions.
The lion head rabbits are super cute because of their mane-like hair, and hence they get their name: lion head. The long fur needs a lot of grooming. Ideally, the lion head rabbits’ fur need to be combed at least once a week. So a special grooming brush is needed to buy for the fur grooming. The grooming should be very gentle from the mane down to the coat of the lion head rabbits. And the lion head rabbits grow thicker coat in winter and shed in spring. When the lion head rabbits molt, three times grooming are needed in a week. Do not ever bathe the lion head rabbits because the lion head rabbits hate water and they may get shocked when they are immersed in the water. As lion head rabbits are crepuscular animals, they are active and like to jump up and down during dusk and dawn. And another vital thing is the diet of the lion head rabbits. As a lion head rabbit's teeth never stop growing and need external force to wear them down, about 75% of the lion head rabbits’ diet should be hay. And 20% of their diet should be high-fiber pellets which can be bought from the stores. The last 5% of the diet should be law fruits and vegetables like leafy greens, celery and even berries.
One more important thing that should be kept in mind is that the lion head rabbits should be spayed and neutered if more rabbits are not expected, and the times of spraying urine could also be cut down. The female ones should be spayed when they are 4-6 months and the male ones should do the procedure as early as they are 8-12 weeks.
-Time with Our Lion head Rabbit-
We got everything ready including the hutch, litter tray, hay and high-fiber pellets etc., and even things needed to be known. When we went to the pet store, the lion head rabbit we bought was 6 months old. My son was so happy and excited that he stayed to watch the lion head rabbit beside the hutch till he went to bed at night.
At dawn of the second day when the lion head rabbit came to our home, my son got up early and ran to see his bunny pet. However one minute later he shouted on me to come over. When I arrived the spot where we placed the hutch of the lion head rabbit, I found that it was a mess in and around the hutch of the lion head rabbit with the faeces and urine here and there and the stinky scent of ammonia was full of the room. What’s more, the litter tray was overturned.
After several times of the excrement cleaning and the cctv watching, we made the following conclusions. No. 1, the rabbit litter box should be firmly fixed on the hutch, but the one we bought couldn’t be easy to fix on the hutch firmly and take down from the hutch.
No. 2, if the litter box could be attached on the hutch, then the lower litter pan should be removable so that we could clean the litter box and change the rabbit litter easily.
No. 3, the grid holes shouldn’t be that large to stop rabbit’s feet being stuck.
Last but not least, the litter box needed fender walls to keep the urine in.
Then we decided to change our rabbit litter box and started to search the right litter box for our lion head rabbit, and this time we chose Baffect Large Size Rabbit Litter Box with Removable Drawer. The Baffect rabbit litter tray met all of our needs perfectly. It could be fixed on the cage firmly and the grid hole is scientifically designed. The lower litter pan could be removable and there were fender walls.
After we received the new bought rabbit litter box, we put it in a corner where our lion head usually liked to excrete when we were nearby and he could run around. When the lion head rabbit were kept in the hutch, we attached the litter box in one corner of his hutch, and it fitted there very well. However, we found that the faeces and urine were still not in the litter box. We observed the activities of the lion head rabbit and sometimes also inspected by cctv, we found that the lion head rabbit just wanted to play and sleep in the litter box but not to excrete in it. His excrement place was in another hutch corner near the wall. And we also noticed that he also sprayed urine sometimes. My son moved the litter box to the hutch corner near the wall and screwed the fixed knob to attach the litter box to the hutch, but the lion head rabbit still declined to use the litter box and just excreted in the place near it. We should continuously clean the urine and pick up the fecal pellets, it’s really not funny.
It became very urgent to get the lion head rabbit litter trained. We tried many ways to do that like keeping the lion head rabbit a few hours in the hutch, hanging the hay bag on the hutch just above the litter box so the lion head rabbit could eat the hay when he excreted and putting the urine soaked hay in the removable drawer pan etc.. After more than one week, he finally excreted in the litter box. And when he sprayed urine, the fender walls could keep the urine in the litter box and we didn't need to clean the surrounding place.
With the litter training succeeded, the litter box cleaning task became much easier. However another episode happened. As I needed to go on a 3 days' business trip, my son took over all the tasks of taking care of the lion head rabbit. He remembered all the things except cleaning the litter tray and changing the litter materials. When I came back, the removable drawer tray were filled with faeces and the urine had overflowed. The drawer tray was not so deep that it needed to be cleaned at least every other day or the urine would overflow. But it's not a big deal, we just remembered to clean it every other day.
So I started to clean the hutch, the litter box and the floor again. Firstly, I sprayed detergent on the litter box to clean the fender walls and base. Secondly, I took down the removable drawer pan and dumped the rabbit litter, and also sprayed detergent to clean it thoroughly. Finally, I mopped the floor and hutch with detergent. No more than 10 minutes, I cleaned all including the litter box, the hutch and the floor. Cleaning the litter box just needed two steps: mop the above part with some detergent and take down the drawer pan to clean. It's so easy and convenient.

Even though we had confronted some problems at the beginning period of the days when we stayed together with our lion head rabbit, he was so energetic, adorable and cuddly that we had already forgotten them.
-How to do the litter training-
With the experience of the lion head rabbit, we are sure that it is very necessary to get a rabbit litter trained if you also want to get a rabbit pet and keep your home clean at the same time. The following I will share the ways how to do the litter training that we tried and succeeded.
Firstly, you need to buy an appropriate rabbit litter box. The Baffect Large Size Rabbit Litter Box with Removable Drawer is one of the appropriate rabbit litter boxes and I really love it.
Secondly, you should observe your rabbit and find out the favored elimination spot of him or her.
Thirdly, clean the excrement trace thoroughly.
Fourthly, place the rabbit litter box in your rabbit's preferred elimination spot, put some urine-soaked hay in the litter box, and hang the hay bag above the rabbit litter box so that the rabbit can eat hay when he or she does the elimination.
Finally, keep cleaning the elimination trace in other places and repeating the above steps till the rabbit begins to use the litter box. If the rabbit begins to use the litter box, don’t clean the excrement trace instantly and leave it in the rabbit litter box at least 24 hours to let the rabbit get to know that the litter box is the right place to excrete.
-Summary-
All in all, the Baffect Large Size Rabbit Litter Box with Removable Drawer is quite a litter box for in door rodents. It is large enough for the full-grown rodents and the barrier walls can keep the urine in and the surrounding place clean, and the removable drawer design makes the litter box cleaning convenient and easy, and the rabbit litter box can be attached to the hutch firmly to avoid the rolling-over occurring. I like it very much. It is a perfect litter box for you if you also want to keep a rodent pet.
