Reviews: Make Popsicles with Baffect Stainless Steel Popsicle Molds - Easy as Pie
Hey, buddies! How are you doing? This is Rachel from the Baffect team. Lately, what excites me most is that summer is approaching. I love summer so much that I can’t wait to go on a popsicle binge!
I used to buy a lot of popsicles from the supermarket, but as my son grew up I rarely bought commercially available popsicles because there were too many food additives. Fortunately, Baffect Stainless Steel Popsicle Molds that I recently purchased allowed us to enjoy a wide variety of healthy homemade popsicles every day. Today I’m going to review it.
To begin with, let’s learn about the details.
-Details-
This product is called Baffect Stainless Steel Popsicle Molds with Sticks Holder. It comes with two options for design: flat and round head. I chose the one with a round head because I found the shape adorable. You can choose the one with a flat head if you prefer classic and retro design. I placed an order and received it three days later.
Its packing was in good condition when it arrived. After opening it, I saw the brown carton inside. On the front of the carton, there was a stick figure of the Round Head Popsicle Mold while there was the logo Baffect and a slogan that said ''Colour your life'' on the back. There was information about Baffect and the popsicle mold on both sides.
I opened the carton and found each mold was wrapped in a separate foam film, which effectively prevented scratches during transportation.
Then I unwrapped the foam films and got a good look at what was inside. There was a set of 6 round head popsicle molds with a popsicle mold holder base, 6 lids each with a leak-proof rubber sealing ring, 50 reusable popsicle sticks, 20 plastic bags for storing popsicles, 2 extra rubber sealing rings and 10 extra sticks for replacement, and a bonus cleaning brush. What a rich package!
Now let me check the accessories one by one. I’ ll begin with the molds.
The single mold with round head measures 4.8*2*10.3cm(1.89*0.78*4.06in). It's said each mold can fit 3oz liquid(85g).
What’s more, the edges of molds aren’t sharp at all due to a certain thickness of the molds.
As for the modeling, the mouth of the popsicle mold adopts classic design with square edge while the other end is designed as semicircle. There are two grooves on the front and back of each mold that make up almost 3/4 of the length of the mold. And I thought the grooves were designed to create a classic pattern of popsicles.
Next, I focused on the base holder. Each set of Baffect Stainless Steel Popsicle Mold is equipped with a base holder, which is also made of stainless steel. The base holder consists of 12 horizontal wavy steel bars in two layers, 4 longitudinal steel bars and a thick square frame on both sides. Every weld is firm, so the holder can stand firmly and it doesn’t tilt.
Then I tried to put the molds on the base holder and made a surprising discovery. Remember the grooves on the molds? It turned out that the other thing the grooves did was to allow the molds to slide into the holder base. Then the molds got stuck at where the grooves ended. To hold the molds better, the holder also played a crucial role. The wavy shapes of steel bars on the holder are designed to perfectly fit grooves in the molds and hold the molds in place.
Now let’s have a look at the extras. The package of the popsicle sticks says Craft Stick, which means the sticks are made of wood. Additionally, the craft sticks are reusable.
There are 6 stainless steel lids each with a rubber sealing ring. I inserted a stick into the lid and found the rubber rings on the lids are soft and rotatable. The plastic bag measures 18*9cm(7.09*3.5in). I can store popsicles with the bags as needed, and I can buy more popsicle bags in this size as well.
Okay, next came the freezing. I carefully situated the whole popsicle mold in my freezer and the space of my freezer was more than enough to put it down. As far as I know, stainless steel has good thermal conductivity that ensures popsicles only need to be frozen for 5-8 hours. I also referred to the instruction and took the thickness of popsicles into consideration. So I set a 5-hour countdown alarm after turning the freezer temperature down. Actually, overnight freezing is the safest bet, and there’s something to look forward to the next day for us!
Finally after 5 hours, I took the molds out of the freezer and prepared to unmold them.
I tried to pull out one of the popsicles directly but couldn’t make it. It was obvious that this was a wrong way. Then I found the instruction saying that I need to soak the popsicle molds in room-temperature water for 1 minute, then gently pull to remove the popsicle. Thanks to the removable design of Baffect Stainless Steel Popsicle Mold, I can take out as many popsicle molds as needed to unmold, because sometimes I don't need to unmold all popsicles at a time. So I soaked one mold in the container filled with room-temperature water.
One day Jackie said: ''Mommy, can we make more special popsicles with this cool popsicle mold?'' And I replyed: ''Sure we can. Do you have any ideas?'' ''Yeah, I want transparent popsicles with beautiful fruit pieces!'' He said happily. ''That's a great idea. Let's get started!'' It turns out kids are far more creative than you think. So we tried a new recipe together. I chose a kind of pink flavored water and sliced kiwis to add texture and visual appeal. I slid the kiwi slices along the inside of the mold carefully, because I didn’t want it to be folded. Then I slowly poured the flavored water into molds.
As you develop more and more popsicle recipes, prepare yourself for compliments and praises, because your homemade popsicles are going to be the talk of the party. I usually prepare popsicles with this popsicle mold for summer parties, because popsicle is an easy and refreshing treat to help us cool down from the heat. There's no limit to the ingredients since we are all adults, even I create a little bit alcoholic popsicles, which are popular with my friends. I chose vodka for my popsicles. The most important thing is the ratio of ingredients. I mixed together 4 cups of lemonade and 1 cup of vodka until they were well combined. The rest steps are as usual. With a pot of clear ice, there is no better indulgence than these popsicle treats. Now my friends are hyped for these popsicles!
The cleaning brush requires a simple assembly, and its shape makes it easy to clean the molds.
After I assembled the Baffect Stainless Steel Popsicle Mold, we can look at the whole mold. The overall set dimensions include 14.5*13*12cm (5.71*5.12*4.72in) and weighs 761g(1.68lbs). Taking into account the height of the stick which I usually leave 2.5cm(0.99in) exposed, the popsicle mold measures 14.5cm(5.71in) high.
-Why I Choose Stainless Steel Popsicle Mold-
As I mentioned, I am really keen on eating popsicles, especially in summer. Sometimes I want to grab an ice pop when I watch TV at home, but to find nothing. My son Jackie also loves eating popsicles extremely. But I don’t want him to eat too many store-bought kinds of popsicles because the problem is that they typically contain high fructose corn syrup and artificial flavors, which is unhealthy.
So after thinking over and over, I find that a popsicle mold can meet all my needs. After all, it's convenient and healthy to make popsicles at home. So here is the question: when I search the Internet for popsicle molds, I’ll notice that the results vary tremendously. What kind of popsicle mold should I choose from so many dazzling kinds of popsicle molds?
In general, there are three types of materials to choose from: plastic, silicone, and stainless steel. Now I'm going to go through all the comparisons.
First and foremost, I pay close attention to security. For all I know, plastic usually contains Bisphenol A (BPA) which is a chemical that is present in large quantities of many containers used in food and drinks. Studies have shown that BPA is harmful to humans, so many countries ban its use. There are lots of plastic products on the market that are labeled "BPA Free". Are they healthy? Not necessarily, because manufacturers replace BPA with other synthetic chemicals such as BPS and BFP, which may be more dangerous than BPA. To make matters worse, a mix of these chemicals causes more damage to the body. Hence, I rule out the plastic popsicle mold option.
There leaves silicone popsicle mold and stainless steel popsicle mold to choose from. These two materials are both safe, so I will make a comparison. What amazes me most about silicone popsicle mold is the large variety of colors and shapes. But on the contrary, I love the design of stainless steel popsicle mold which is classic and elegant.
The silicone popsicle mold is softer and lighter than the stainless steel one, which makes me more inclined to choose it. But the silicone popsicle mold may not hold up well to repeated dishwashing. By contrast, stainless steel popsicle mold is more durable and resistant to corrosion. Thus, it’s more convenient to clean stainless steel popsicle molds.
Another thing that makes me completely give up the silicone popsicle mold is that it’s easy for the silicone popsicle mold to absorb the smell, which is very strong and doesn’t disperse easily. Imagine one day you wanted to make vanilla popsicles, yet you didn't get the flavor you wanted because the mold smelled like the popsicles you made last time. What a disappointment! As time goes by, it’s possible for the silicone mold to absorb stains and breed bacteria. I have a silicone dinner plate at home that I used to use for my son, and now it smells terrible and moldy! By contrast, stainless steel mold is corrosion-resistant and it’s not easy to breed bacteria or absorb smell. Now I prefer the stainless steel popsicle molds. And I also learned that the content index of Food Grade 304 stainless steel is stricter than ordinary 304 stainless steel. Basically, 304 stainless steel contains 18-20% chromium and 8-10% nickel, whereas Food Grade 304 stainless steel contains 18% chromium and 8% nickel. Food Grade 304 stainless steel does not dissolve harmful substances in the process of using acid and alkali in food production. So referring to the material, Food Grade 304 stainless steel is my final choice.
Best of all, if the accessories are abundant, I don’t have to buy extras. After browsing for a long time, Baffect Stainless Steel Popsicle Mold catches my eye. So I placed an order and it turned out to be a smart bet! Next, I will share with you the features of the mold I found during the process of using. Let's see how it fits my needs perfectly.
-Features-
In the first place, I focus on safety. The Food Grade 304 stainless steel for the Baffect Popsicle Mold has no plastic, non toxic and no odor. Stainless steel doesn't rust or affect the flavor of my popsicles. The edges of molds are not sharp, so I don’t need to worry about my son’s safety when he uses them. But I wanna give a notice here: slowly and gently use the lids, because their edges are a little bit sharper than the molds. In fact, even paper can cut your fingers if you use it in the wrong way. So I don’t think it’s a safety hazard.
The cut of the popsicle sticks is smooth and polished without burrs hurting hands or mouth, which is safe for my child. Our food security can be guaranteed by the high quality popsicle sticks as well.
Secondly, I value convenience. I found the convenience of Baffect Stainless Steel Popsicle Mold in every aspect during use. The most convenient thing about the stainless steel popsicle mold is that it accelerates the popsicles to freeze or release faster than plastic or silicone molds because metal conducts heat faster than plastic or silicone. I don't have to worry it takes too long to enjoy my homemade popsicles.
There is no worry about spills in the popsicle making process either. Here are two reasons for that. The Baffect Stainless Steel Popsicle Mold adopts robotic welding technology which enables them to be smooth outside and inside. This design ensures no leaking while freezing.
The other reason is that these popsicle molds that sit upright in the base holder do not spill while popsicle molds that lay flat are prone to spills and leaks, which will cause annoying waste and mess in popsicle making.
Another convenient design worth mentioning is the top covers each with a leak-proof rubber sealing ring. I find the lids ensure that the sticks are placed correctly so they don’t tilt. The lids also ensure that popsicles are sealed and smell-free when frozen.
After taking the whole mold out of freezer, I find Baffect Stainless Steel Popsicle Mold with a detachable design is definitely more handy than the fixed molds, because it enables me to remove the popsicle molds individually any time I want one. It’s easy for me to refill, clean and reuse one single mold at any time.
When the homemade popsicles are finished, it’s so convenient to share my popsicles with friends. For one thing, the Baffect popsicle stainless steel mold is of proper weight that can be carried easily. For another thing, the yield of six popsicles is just ideal.
Last but not least, I care about the durability of popsicle molds. As far as I know, Food Grade 304 stainless steel is durable for lifetime use! Here are a few reasons: It will not be rusted or corroded. It can be cleaned easily without residue left. No bacteria or odor adsorption affect the use time. Surely it’s dishwasher friendly. The set of popsicle mold also doesn’t take up much space, so I usually just put them in the closet and that makes my kitchen look organized.
-How to make popsicles with the Baffect Stainless Steel Popsicle Mold-
Now I’m going to show you step-by-step instructions to prepare my favorite treats: fruit popsicles.
Firstly, I cleaned the popsicle molds with warm water and dried before use.
Secondly, I prepared my tools and ingredients. I prepared a knife and a blender first. Then I chose several kinds of fruit like watermelons, kiwis, mangos and yogurt as well. I cut the fruit into small pieces and put them into the blender.
After I added a moderate amount of yogurt to the blender, it was time to blend. Then I got three cups of mixed juice.
Thirdly, I filled the popsicle molds with mixed juice. I’m gonna make two watermelon popsicles, two kiwi popsicles and two mango popsicles. Before that, I kept in mind that when food freezes the sweetness becomes less intense. So I tasted my mixture and made it slightly sweeter than I would a smoothie by adding two spoonfuls of honey. You can also supplement the sweetness with a touch of honey, agave nectar, maple syrup, or sugar if needed. It’s easy for me to pour the ingredients into the molds without holding them due to the stable base holder.
One more thing I would note was that I made sure to leave a little space at the top of each mold when I added the mixture to prevent the lids from popping out due to the expansion of mixture after freezing. At my very young age my father taught me that the volume of ice is larger than water, because I put a glass bottle filled with water into the freezer to freeze and it blew up.
Fourthly, I covered the lids with rubber sealing rings and inserted the sticks at a proper height. I found I must be careful to insert the sticks gently to prevent the rubber rings from falling off, because the rubber rings and the sticks have great friction. In fact, I got a seal ring off when I was assembling the mold before because of the rude behavior.Okay, next came the freezing. I carefully situated the whole popsicle mold in my freezer and the space of my freezer was more than enough to put it down. As far as I know, stainless steel has good thermal conductivity that ensures popsicles only need to be frozen for 5-8 hours. So I soaked one mold in the container filled with room-temperature water.
It was so easy to release the popsicle after only 10 seconds. I can't help but think that stainless steel molds are really convenient to use.
Anyway, now I could enjoy my delicious homemade popsicles! I was surprised to find the lids prevent the popsicles from melting and running on your hands when we eat them. What a smart design!
The Baffect Stainless Steel Popsicle Mold yields six three-ounce popsicles that could be a fantastic treat. The popsicles are not only good looking, delicious, but more importantly, very healthy.
